Enthusiastic, engaging presentation style. Relevant and important information delivered. Our session got a little off course and was rushed in the end, but still so helpful.

I had so much fun in this self defense class, and was very empowered while learning so much! This class is a must have for anyone looking to feel more confident and aware in any situation regarding self defense. Highly recommend!!
Wow just took a self defense class here that was mind blowingly good and would highly recommend it to anyone who has ever considered that learning how to defend yourself might me a good idea.
This review is long overdue, but if you want a fantastic mixed martial arts education that teaches you control and responsibility with what you learn, Way of the Crane is the place. I finished a challenging course during the summer, and I gained self confidence in a controlled, safe environment. I highly recommend taking any of the courses offered!
Completed the Street Wize self defense course and am utterly blown away by how EMPOWERING and educational the class was. Melanie and staff are devoted to providing you with the knowledge to protect yourself against threat or unwelcome advances. I have a better sense of my feminine energy and muscle memory to better defend myself if in an unfortunate situation in the future. WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TO ALL WOMEN! You are not going to get this type of experience at any other self dense teaching facility. I am extremely grateful to the staff and fellow participants.
Excellent self defense training. A must for every woman! Highly recommend this instruction.
It has been easy to devote 16 years of regular practice to this school. It’s a deep training that is nearly impossible to find these days, far from instant gratification based, and the marital artists there are incredible people that embody integrity. The women’s self defense is ferocious, effective, and delightful – I want every woman I know to do it, and I wish it was taught in every school around the world! It is so worth checking this place out!
I did not know how good I had it at Way of The Crane until I had to leave the state for my career. I studied here for 7+ years and left as an advanced rank. As I have been looking for a new Dojo to study at, I recognize that the quality of instruction and curriculum in unparalleled. As I try out the martial arts classes to find a new school, from Akido, Judo, MMA, Boxing and Karate, the skills and discipline I obtained here are recognized by the instructors of these schools. If you have found this gem then you have the opportunity to study at in my opinion the best Dojo in Colorado and one of the best in the country. If you are serious about truly learning the martial arts then this is the best place to be.
When I do return to Colorado, I will be returning to Way of The Crane.
A great place to train. Individual instruction and attention. Students and teachers are very friendly. Training is hard but very very safe. I’ve trained in many places in my time as a martial artist and especially for beginners the fundamentals and teaching are second to none here.
Authentic martial ARTS. Not a tournament school. No macho garbage – safe and chill for everyone. Just a friendly, thorough, intelligent, effective place to train. I have yet to leave a class without laughing out loud, working up a great sweat, and learning something amazing.
Fantastic school, with a unique blend of traditional martial arts and modern, practical self-defense. I have been training here for 19 years, and the curriculum is deep and rich enough to keep me coming back because there’s always more to learn. The community of students is friendly and supportive, and it’s just a fabulous place to train!
The women’s self-defense course is highly recommended and effective, both physically and emotionally. Helps women to realize that they are worthy & capable of protecting themselves.
I took Streetwize Self Defense two years ago. Recently I was accosted at a deserted car wash and I was trying my best to just finish up and get away from the guy who was talking to me. Next thing I know he is right next to me, in my face.
My body and my brain went into automatic thanks to Streetwize. I stepped back, right hand in a fist at my hip, feet wide and ready to kick, left hand out while I shouted “you need to back off!” My heart was racing as I looked him up and down in order to ID him for the police if things went bad.
He looked at my fist, my face, my feet, gave me a sneer and walked away.
Melanie, your training saved me from something evil – no doubt. I am forever indebted.
If you want self-defense that works and that stays with you, do Streetwize.
Melanie is the best. You really learn self defense and I recommended to everybody. It was great. Don’t forget to pass and take the classes.
StreetWize has great self defense instructors who take the time to teach you how to physically defend yourself if in case something goes wrong. Learn the proper striking techniques, defense, body language, deescalate and proven verbal commands that make a difference in most self defense situations. Instructors are very knowledgeable and teach you step by step on how you can take control of a situation. A lot of equipment to use to help your through their program. I highly recommend for employee self defense or personal training!
A great dojo. A great mix of fighting skills, self defense and the traditional practice of kata. The more advanced students truly care about the advancement of the lower ranked students. Sensei Murphy wants the art to be practiced by the student in their own way, while at the same time maintaining a core curriculum. A truly unique mix.
Was a student for several years. Great teachers and community teaching very practical self defense.
I sent my 18 year old daughter who is leaving for college this fall to a Streetwize Self Defense class with Sensei Melanie Murphy. At first my daughter didn’t want to go, but I thought it was important to send her away with some tools to protect herself in case she finds herself in a bad position. She spent 2 hours with Melanie and when she came home there was a noticeable excitement and confidence in her. Melanie brought that confidence out by showing my daughter how strong she really is. I would recommend that every dad send their daughter to see Melanie and take one of her self defense class. Thank you Melanie!
I was a student many years ago, and I still credit this institution with the basis of my personal foundation. Excellent teachings in self-discipline, focus, and balance.
The best martial arts dojo that I know. The experiences and the practice I have fostered here, thanks to the immense depth of knowledge of the Sensei and Senpai, has pushed me beyond what I thought was capable for myself, both mentally and physically.
By my calculation, Sensei and the advanced students have over 200 years of combined karate experience under their belts. This is evident in the teaching of every movement and action. I have never had a question go unanswered, because practitioners at this school will not teach something that is not understood at it’s core.
The work is not easy, as you should not expect it to be. It is demanding and requires a personal dedication. I have found, however, that through this practice I have increased my aptitude to be dedicated. Do not come here expecting a black belt in only a few years or even within a decade.
I’m the year and a half I’ve been coming here, I have not changed many belts, however I know with absolute certainty that I’ve grown incredibly. Before, I could not be sure that I could defend myself if I ever need to. Now I am certain that I have the self defense acumen to at least stand a fighting chance sound I ever need it.
If you truly want to learn karate and push yourself to become your best self, come to Way of the Crane.
Wonderful instruction in Okinawan Karate with up to five classes per week. Sensei has 37 years of experience.
I went as a part of a company self-defense class. From the moment I walked in, the teacher was very welcoming. You can definitely tell the amount of passion she has for her art and vision for her students.
Definitely recommend it for any company or individual
I had been seeking a class like this for my two daughters, one of whom is going to college this year. I wanted something along the lines of “how to survive the most important 10 seconds of your life, if diplomacy fails”, and Sensei Melanie delivered. I now have confidence that if my daughter is in a bad situation, she will have the knowledge, strategy and tactics in her toolkit to survive and get away. I feel like this was a Top 10 Parenting Decision in our 18 years of raising kids.
The women’s self-defense course is highly recommended and effective, both physically and emotionally. Helps women to realize that they are worthy & capable of protecting themselves.

My daughter and I took a self defense training from Melonie and we could not have been more impressed. The knowledge she shared with us is invaluable! The new perspective we gained, as well as the skills we learned will help us protect ourselves should we ever be put in a dangerous situation. Melanie was very personable and we felt connected to her immediately. This is a training that every woman should take! I feel so fortunate to have had this experience with my daughter, and am so thankful that she has this new knowledge and perspective heading into her teenage years and young adulthood. I wish I had this same training as a young woman.

Enthusiastic, engaging presentation style. Relevant and important information delivered. Our session got a little off course and was rushed in the end, but still so helpful.
A good experience. I learned a great deal and I’m very glad I took the class.
Melanie’s instruction was easy to understand and she made it applicable for all who attended.
She did a great job of teaching exactly what to do when, i would take a part two class from her in a heart beat
This was a very intense, beneficial class. The demonstration was great and the individual feedback while practicing was very helpful. Not sure I could have lasted more than 3 hours but I have trouble remembering all the moves. Strong instructor showed us how to be more confident.
We covered a lot in a short period of time. I would have liked a sheet showing moves and purpose so I could practice at home. I learned so much, thank you for offering this class.
an extraordinary event raising my awareness and providing me a vastly different way of thinking about things
Melanie was an amazing instructor and so professional! I would love to sign-up for another one of her classes. Honestly, it was a lot of information in just three hours but I do feel confident about what she taught us. She really knows her stuff and was a fantastic presenter. I hope she comes back in the future.
Thank you for bringing in such an expert in the field of self defense! Melanie was great. I would definitely sign up for another one of her classes. My class seemed a little too crowded but she and her volunteers made it work.
Was so impressed and had fun learning to find my voice. Really really appreciated. If Melanie comes back, I’m bringing every lady that works with me.
This was a fabulous class! I loved the instructor and the practice was top notch! I would love to do additional training.
Melanie was amazing and so empowering! My step-daughter and I loved taking this class with her. Thank you for setting this up! Definitely worth doing again in the future.
I was really impressed with the instructor & the skills she taught us!! Definitely worth the day.
Melanie was great at what she does. You can truly tell she is living her purpose on this earth. She was confident and clear in her delivery of the information. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone else in the future and have already told several people how it went. Thank you for offering it.
That was the best class ever! Makes you feel empowered! I would take this class again in a heart beat. I would also sign up for similar classes.
Melanie was awesome. I really enjoyed her class and felt I learned a lot.
